What Is Acceptance? The Lesson Richa Could Not Understand
If you had met Richa a few years ago, you would have admired her energy.
She was the kind of person people naturally gravitated toward. Warm, caring, dependable, and positive, she had a way of making others feel comfortable. Whether it was a friend going through a difficult phase, a colleague struggling with work, or her parents needing support, Richa was always there.
She wasn’t someone who had an easy life.
Like most people, she had her share of challenges. She had dealt with health concerns from time to time, but she never allowed them to define her. She faced difficulties with determination and continued moving forward.
At work, she was known for her dedication and professionalism. She took pride in her work, willingly learned new things, and consistently delivered results.
Life wasn’t perfect. But it felt stable. And most importantly, it felt like it was moving in the right direction. Then came the promotion cycle.
For months, Richa had worked harder than ever. She had taken on additional responsibilities, supported her team, and contributed beyond what her role required. Her manager had praised her work repeatedly, and many of her colleagues believed she was the obvious choice for promotion.
Naturally, she expected good news. When the announcement finally arrived, her name wasn’t on the list. Someone else had been promoted.
Someone she believed had contributed less and had less experience.
At first, she thought there must have been a mistake. Then came disappointment. Followed by frustration. Then self-doubt.
Questions began to fill her mind.
“What did I do wrong?”
“Why wasn’t I chosen?”
“Was all my hard work meaningless?”
For weeks, she replayed the situation repeatedly.
Every conversation.
Every project.
Every decision.
She searched for explanations that would make the disappointment easier to accept.
But none came.
What made the situation difficult wasn’t just the missed promotion itself.
It was the gap between reality and expectation.
Richa had created a picture of how life should unfold.
She worked hard.
Therefore, she should be rewarded.
She deserved the promotion.
Therefore, she should receive it.
When reality failed to match that picture, she suffered.
This is where many of us find ourselves.
We often believe our pain comes from an event.
But sometimes, a large part of our suffering comes from resisting the event.
Acceptance begins when we stop arguing with reality.
This does not mean agreeing with what happened.
It does not mean pretending it was fair.
It does not mean giving up on future opportunities.
Acceptance simply means acknowledging the truth of the present moment.
The promotion was not hers.
The decision had already been made.
No amount of replaying the situation could change it.
Only after accepting reality could she decide how to move forward.
At the time, however, Richa did not understand this lesson.
She believed the missed promotion was the biggest challenge she would face.
Life had other plans.
The disappointment she was carrying was only the beginning of a journey that would teach her the true meaning of acceptance.
Reflection
Acceptance begins when we stop arguing with reality and start understanding it. The first step toward peace is acknowledging what is, not what we wish it to be.
